This program funded by United Way "Success by 6", and the Ministry for Children and Family Development.

It is also strongly supported by Langley Evangelical Free Church, and by volunteers that sort the fruits and vegetables.

We need volunteers to help us with the Harvest Box sort for a few hours once a month.

The last Thursday of every month, we need a few volunteers to meet in the Gym at Langley Evangelical Free Church before 9:00 AM.  We need one or two able bodies to set up three large tables for the sorting.  A truck will arrive with a skid or two of produce (which they will bring into the gym), the produce will need to be unloaded onto the tables.  This can vary from between 2-3 pound boxes of lettuce to 20 pound bags of potatoes.

We need about four to six volunteers to assist with the sort (this can include those that helped with the tables).  The sort consists of working an assembly line of sorts.  Normally you would be given two to three fruits and/or vegetables to put into a bag (i.e. five potatoes, three apples per bag).  You would then pass the bag to the next volunteer that would add the next items available.  The last volunteer in the line adds the newsletter, and puts the bag in a specific area for pick up.  Currently we sort between 50 and 150 bags, but hope to grow this program more in the future.

Once the sort is over, the tables are cleaned, and put back where they came from, and the cardboard boxes are flattened, and walked around the building to be deposited in the cardboard recycling bin.

This may sound like a lot, but most times the sort only lasts about one to two hours from start to finish.
